How does DIFOTI detect early tooth decay?

Typically, tooth decay scatters and absorbs more light than surrounding healthy tissue. Decay near the imaged surface appears as a darker area against the more translucent brighter back-ground of surrounding healthy anatomy. DIFOTI produces high-contrast images of decay on all tooth surfaces. It takes less than four hours to learn how to read DIFOTI images.

What differentiates DIFOTI from radiography?

DIFOTI images can indicate the presence of early decay before either film or digital radiography. (Ref: A. Schneiderman, M. Elbaum et al; Caries Research 1997; 31:103-110)
